CITATIONS NOW PRINT OUT WIRELESSLY
ON THE STREETS OF YONKERS

Yonkers, NY, March 28, 2005 – The City of Yonkers’ parking citations are getting a makeover thanks to the EZTag Corporation’s proven electronic citation issuance and management solution. The City’s Parking Violations Bureau (PVB) has chosen to implement EZTag’s off-the-shelf, state of the art mobile enforcement application featuring Hand Held Products’ Dolphin 9500 rugged handheld computers and Zebra QL320 mobile printers for Yonkers’ new system.

Taking advantage of New York State’s DMV vehicle registration decal, complete vehicle information can be retrieved with the push of a button. Tickets can be issued in seconds.

With EZTag’s comprehensive enforcement_solution, a citation is issued in 10 to 30 seconds. This timely process is achieved through well organized data entry screens combined with data retention. In certain circumstances one field is required to issue a ticket. “Using the Dolphin 9500 Imager, the officer scans the DMV registration decal and auto populates all respective vehicle information,” stated Dan Rossiter, Account Manager for EZTag. “Our focus is to minimize the ticket issuance process for each vehicle” Once completed, the citation is printed via Bluetooth communications. Officers communicate collected information to a central database via WiFi network connectivity currently located only at PVB. EZTag is a pioneer in deploying enforcement solutions that make full use of embedded communication technologies to perform varying tasks.

The central database provides a complete, accurate and timely data warehouse for data reporting and analysis. This central database stores comprehensive information such as scofflaw (boot/tow), stolen vehicles, vehicle and location tolerances and other public safety information which is loaded in each handheld during each communication process. "Batch communications using WiFi are now more cost effective than Ethernet, but the City’s real WiFi strategy is to take advantage of real-time connectivity in the field,” stated Dan Rossiter. Once the City establishes hotspots in strategic locations, real-time, up-to-the-minute enforcement information will be available to the enforcement officer. The overwhelming advantage in such a situation is that this will require no further hardware investment to the mobile solution. Network connectivity is entirely transparent to the officer in the field. Although the City has chosen to deploy this application using WiFi communications, it is also available using real-time wireless communications such as GSM/GPRS or 1xRTT/CDMA.

The hardware devices developed by Hand Held Products Inc. and Zebra Technologies Corp. enables EZTag to provide a complete and integrated citation issuance and management solution. HHP’s Dolphin 9500 productivity-enhancing features include PDF417 scanning, imaging and wireless communications previously unavailable to the City. Scanning the PDF417 code on the DMV vehicle registration decal, provides complete vehicle information making the citation issuance process more efficient.

Zebra Technologies provides accurate and timely printing with high performance mobile printers that are durable and dependable in the field. The compact QL320 prints quickly and with high resolution. It is simple to load paper and easy to maintain since its direct thermal and there are no ribbons, cartridges or ink. "The EZTag Corporation has been outstanding in its implementation of Zebra QL 320 mobile printers for City of Yonkers Parking Violations Bureau. The printer is a perfect fit for this application- allowing the enforcement officers to store 200 tickets per roll and print within 30 feet of the handheld device using Bluetooth wireless technology," notes Bob Danahy, director of global mobile and wireless technology at Zebra Technologies. "We also are proud of the fact that the printer can withstand the rigors of the coldest and rainiest days in Yonkers, in addition to the accidental drops to the pavement," he added.

One of the greatest features that these two partners have in common is the quality and efficiency of their respective products in such a mission critical application. The Enforcement Officer’s focus must be on ticketing and not trouble shooting.

One such example, although there are more, is battery life during the officer’s shift. Given the power draining onboard components, battery autonomy and power management in the 9500 and the QL320 ensure that this mission critical feature is maintained throughout the officer’s entire shift.

"This project is an excellent example of the use of advances in technology to more effectively perform vital law enforcement functions," stated Dan Rossiter.
